Hello my name is Janice, I am writing on behalf of my brother Geoff Ablett, who has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Geoff has spent nine of the last 12 months in and out of various hospitals undergoing extensive tests and assessments as doctors searched for answers to explain his rapidly declining health. Despite numerous investigations and consultations with specialists, his condition continued to worsen without a clear diagnosis along with his mental health and quality of life.
After persistent advocating from our family and further specialists doing a large review of his condition and the last 12 months of declining health, just prior to Christmas Eve of 2025, Geoff was finally diagnosed with the incurable terminal illness Motor Neurone Disease
Geoff is currently still in hospital and as a family our deepest wish is to bring him home, we want to care for him in a familiar, loving environment and provide him with the best possible quality of life during this incredibly difficult time, Geoff is also longing to be home as most would understand.
Receiving this diagnosis has been devastating for our family. MND does not discriminate and progressively takes away the body’s ability to function. Impacting mobility, speech, and independence. Watching someone you love face this illness is heartbreaking especially a man, my brother, who has always been fit and active and proactive at taking on life.
Geoff’s health has continued to decline. Geoff now relies on a wheelchair for mobility and requires specialised care including hands on assistance with showering, dressing, toileting and transfers. He requires BiPAP respiratory support and has complex and neurological needs and there is currently little to no carer support at home. To safely bring him home, significant modifications are needed in his home. These include access ramps, bedroom and bathroom renovations, mobility aids and ongoing daily health care assistance including nurses and carers. After applying and being deemed eligible for My Aged Care Funding, we were informed that the new roll out of new and existing packages has been significantly delayed, leaving a large backlog of approved participants, including Geoff, without the access to care, equipment and services that he so desperately needs. There is no fast track, no clear timeframe and very limited interim assistance for people like Geoff, who are already approved. This has created an enormous hardship on our family, like it has on so many Australians and unfortunately it has now come to a point where Geoff is missing out on vital services. We are now desperate to cover essential costs to provide immediate care and dignity during this devastating battle. Unfortunately, our family support network is small and the financial burden of these necessary requirements is overwhelming.
We are seeking financial assistance to help make Geoff’s return home possible and to ensure he receives the care, comfort, and dignity he deserves. Any donation, no matter how small would be deeply appreciated, all proceeds will go directly towards supporting Geoff and our family through this incredibly challenging and constantly changing journey.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity, and support during this time.
Yours sincerely,
Janice & Family
