Hi, my name is Gerald Hester, aka Geo. I am a deaf, hard-of-hearing person with a lifelong permanent disability in hearing loss. My life has been a struggle, no doubt, trying to get jobs, communicate with others, and feeling oppressed. My degree in urban planning has not helped me advance my career.
My passion was relit last year when I was hired as a para-educator and began to work with kindergartners and middle-school-aged children who have the same disability as I do. They look to me as a role model, a functioning Deaf adult navigating the real world. I decided to go back to school to earn my Master's degree in teaching American Sign Language so I can teach everyone, from kids to adults, the benefits of Sign Language and how it helps bridge the gap in communication.
I am proud to say that I have begun my journey to earn my Master's degree at the world's only Deaf university, Gallaudet, dedicated to providing high-quality education to Deaf and hard-of-hearing people worldwide. In just a few weeks, I will be leaving to stay on campus, and it is not cheap going back to school. While I have some help with books and school fees, I still need to pay for a dorm room and food. Any funds would be appreciated and helpful while I navigate through this challenging and exciting time in my life. This opportunity will allow me to gain lifelong experiences in teaching American Sign Language and to be a shining example to my daughter that you can get your education when you set your mind to it and soar!
I'd like to suggest for you to watch Deaf President Now! on appleTV, as it showcases what it is like as a Deaf person to struggle in real life and it is part of the reason why I want to go Gallaudet and fight for our rights to communicate with everyone. Thank you for your support!!
