Gen Walks America!

Donation protected
The short version:

I am going to spend 10 months walking across the USA, testing my limits, spreading awesome, and meeting Nerdfighters along the way! It will all be documented for the curious in the form of blogs, vlogs, pictures and posts. Any money that comes my way will be used firstly for new shoes and glasses before I leave for my trip, and then food, supplies, and camping fees along the way!

The LONG version is below. And please follow my journey and cheer me on at these places:

WHO
Hi, if you don't know me already I'm Genevieve Lancaster.

About me:

- Born and raised in Southern California. As a kid I was a homeschooled tomboy with an unnatural affinity for Ninja Turtles and cats.
- In my teens and 20s I explored my passion for acting in school, while working at movie theaters and video rental stores so I could always watch movies no matter how broke I was. I competed in BJJ and took Japanese language classes.
- I have fairly recently found my love for script supervising and that is my current career focus. I also recently moved to Portland, Oregon and I'll be turning 32 the day before I leave for my walk. I can juggle and write in circular Galifreyan.

WHAT
I am going to spend approximately 6 months walking across The United States of America! I will walk the entire way, only getting into vehicles if necessity requires. I will be pushing a cart filled with my possessions and my home - a tent! I will be camping the entire way.

WHEN
May 07th 2015 is the estimated start date.

WHERE
I will start on the Oregon Coast (have to go ocean to ocean to make it official!), I'm thinking Tillamook! I hear they have cheese :) I will end somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean! I haven't figured out an end point, but I'll have plenty of time for that.

WHY
It is a personal pilgrimage, born out of both a desire for adventure and a need to test myself. I have problems with anxiety and depression and I feel like I'm stuck, I don't know how to move forward in my life. This will be a journey of physical and psychological hardships and I hope to make it to the east coast stronger and healthier in every sense. This is a time of change for me, a time of personal betterment. Within the past year I've quit smoking and lost 100 pounds. I want to continue this growth, and I believe this crazy adventure will help me on so many levels.

Part of that growth will be from meeting awesome people along the way. I have always been very shy and meeting new people makes me anxious so I usually avoid it. I want to get better at it. I want to be able to hold conversations with people who stop me and are curious about my walk, I want to be able to approach people and ask for directions, ask about the towns I walk through, ask strangers if I can camp in their yard! It will push me.

I also want to visit Nerdfighters along my route! I am part of an amazing online community of open-minded, thoughtful people who care about the world and making it a better place. We're also generally pretty nerdy and silly. It's kind of awesome. We're spread out all over the place and I think it will be fantastic to connect with others IRL.

HOW
Hopefully with some help from you! I have spent the past few months slowly gathering and making supplies. I have been in DIY heaven! What I can't make I mostly buy from Craigslist, Goodwill, and the Dollar Tree. It's been a fantastic and mostly successful treasure hunt, but now I've run in to a couple of items that are out of my budget:

-A good pair of boots
-New glasses

I've tried on a bunch of shoes at Goodwill but I haven't found anything of the quality I'll need for walking all day, every day for 6 months. I have an old ankle injury which still bothers me sometimes, so I would like to get a nice, sturdy pair of hiking boots.

The glasses are more of a luxury than a necessity, my prescription isn't very high, but I'd sure like to see this beautiful country clearly as I walk through it.

I have a small weekly budget for food but I worry that I do not have extra money for unexpected expenses during the 6 month trek, like replacing busted gear or occasional motel stays during really rough weather. Any money I might get past the price of shoes and glasses will be saved for such expenses. Also, I will probably need a way back home at the end :)

I will make this trip come hell or high water, even if it is barefoot and with blurry vision! I have a powerful need for a good long walk and nothing will stop that. If you have anything to spare to help me achieve this craziness I would be forever grateful! <3 <3 <3
