Film Festival Trip to Albania
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Genie Deez; I am a filmmaker and a recent MFA graduate from the University of Southern California. Before that, I studied marketing, media, and film at the University of Notre Dame.
I've always loved media --to me it's a tool with which to enlighten, educate, and uplift others. I always ponder ways to use film, tv, or music to connect people.
I recently directed a documentary about a Syrian refugee named Jihad Abdo. The film has since been accepted to the International Human Rights Film Festival in Albania --our first film festival! These monies will go toward round-trip travel to and from Albania. Hopefully we can hit the 3 week deadline!
This campain, in particular, means so much to me because it is the first film festival to which we were admitted. Not only will they screen "Jihad in Hollywood," but there will be a Q&A portion during which I may share more about the process behind making this film. And, moreover, the film is important because it explores the largest refugee crisis since WWII. Our main character, Jihad, and the struggle to regain his lost career represents something quintessentially human...and that's what the world needs right now: an opportunity to observe and discuss the things we have in common. We need opportunities to observe and discuss our humanity instead of our differences.
With your help, we can take this film around the country...around the world even! And it starts with Albania. As a filmmaker, I try to create meaningful experiences, and an opportunity to take this film to the International Human Rights Film Festival is a chance to share this story with others. Along the way, I will keep you updated with photos and video blog posts. We will also make it possible for donors to view the film.
Thanks everyone!
Yours,
Genie

GoFundMe is asking that I provide clear information regarding the following questions:
1. Who you are and where you’re from:
Eugene "Genie Deez" Staples II from Los Angeles, CA.
2. Your relationship with the parties for whom you are raising funds and your method of contact:
I am raising the funds for myself in order to travel to Albania to screen a film. The film features Syrian refugees but the funds raised for this campaign, in particular, does NOT go toward refugees.
3. How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible):
I will literally purchase a round trip plane ticket with this money. I'm not sure what airline yet, but I will be flying from LAX to Tirana, Albania.
4. Your specific plan for how the funds will be withdrawn from and sent to the beneficiary of the campaign
Once again, I am the beneficiary. I will withdraw the funds in order to purchase airfare.
