Geneva's Hope Fund

Hi everyone, my name is Rebecca Ramsey (aka Auntie Ducky) and I am creating this fundraising campaign in an effort to ease the financial burden that my sister and her beautiful family are facing due to a sudden, severe, and unexpected nightmare. You read these all the time, donate to the ones that you can, and never think it will happen to you or your family, but here we are. It can happen to any of us.

This beautiful teen is my oldest niece, Geneva Stuttler, and she has been diagnosed with cancer.  She's 14 years old (almost 15, she'd say, since her birthday is in less than 2 weeks) Just writing it seems so surreal, this is not supposed to happen to any kid! Currently, we are waiting on biopsy results to let us know what kind of cancer it is - I will share what we do know and keep this updated as we learn more.

On Thursday night, my sister called the nurse line after noticing that Geneva's breathing was labored following a short trip to the grocery store. Their advice was to take her into the emergency room, so Jay and Geneva went to Lovelace. Once they arrived and were seen, the ER doctors had them transported by ambulance to UNM Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. At this time, we all thought it was pneumonia, and Geneva was given an oxygen mask and a CT Scan was discussed, however, she was unable to lay still or on her back, due to the trouble she had breathing and attempting not to cough. As Friday progressed, breathing became more difficult for Geneva and a decision was made by her team of doctors and nurses to sedate and intubate her. She has been in a medically-induced coma since.

The CT scan was performed and they've found masses in my sweet niece's liver and abdomen as well as in both of her lungs. At this time, one of Geneva's lungs has a mass that is inhabiting nearly 90% of the space and there is another mass in her other lung. They are keeping her in this medically-induced coma due to the fact that the large tumor in her lung is so close to her heart/an artery and any big movement could be deterimental. We will not know the treatment options or plans until after the biopsy but were told to expect weeks to months in the PICU because Geneva is very, very, very sick.

To add to this already paralyzing news, Covid cases are on the rise and the PICU had to limit any family/visitors to only 2 people instead of 4, so my sister and her partner (who live in Belen and also have a younger daughter) made the difficult decision regarding who those 2 people should be. Together they decided that Jay and I would have the access to support and care for Geneva due to my proximity to the hospital and the fact that I can work there if necessary, at least until my sister's own surgery to remove her kidney that will be scheduled later this month because she also has a cancerous mass that was found in May.

My sister is a contract worker and deals with secure information, so she is unable to work from the hospital, nor will she receive any type of compensation if she is not working. Her partner is on disability. Jay is terrified of the future and already trying to find work she can do in the hospital room. That breaks my heart... I really need my sister and her family to be able to focus their energy on healing, supporting, and loving Geneva, Seryna, and each other through this time and not worrying about if they will have a home, or their car, or food on their table. I don't want my sister to have to leave her daughter's side just for money. My brother and I were able to help cover her bills this month and will do everything we can to continue to help and support them, but if you have the ability to help them too, please do.

Thank you for reading this. I appreciate your consideration and love.

Love,

B.
