Genesis Sun CIC

Introduction

We are Genesis Sun and we recognise that young, black British people continue to score below the UK national average for levels of  attainment and results at GCSE and are therefore at a significant educational disadvantage relative to their peers. Only 26.9% of Black Caribbean students achieve a 5+ in English and Maths compared to 42.7% of their peers (DfE, 2019).  Successive governments have carried out studies and commissioned reports exploring the possible reasons for this underachievement but there are no current plans by the government to address this matter.

Statistics shows that black people hold just 1.5% of leadership positions of the 3.7 million leadership positions across public and private sectors.  A 0.1% increase in 8 years.  8.8% is held by Asian, mixed and other ethnic minorities.  CIPD research shows there is a significant lack of racial diversity at the top of UK organisations and states “it must be a priority for businesses”.  Statistics suggest it is not a priority, but it is for Genesis Sun.

Who are Genesis Sun?

As BAME parents with backgrounds in Education, Research and IT Project Management we want to address this real social challenge which continues to exist. We will help to create a more diverse nation where all children can look forward to achieving success by implementing imaginative change immediately.

Diane the founder embarked on this social enterprise as she is the mother of a teenage son who was focused in primary school but became distracted in secondary.   Seeing this shift in her son motivated her to form Genesis Sun to provide encouragement and support for less advantaged young, black British people in the UK and inspire them to aim higher, build confidence and succeed.

Debra Co-Director is a mother of two daughters who are young adults.  Debra spent 13 years in the education sector and is keen to see improvement in the attainment of young, black British people and a change in the curriculum to encourage and inspire those that are currently underachieving.  Diane and Debra have known each other for over 25 years.

Genesis Sun is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC). Our mission at Genesis Sun, is to help less advantaged and disengaged young, black British people achieve successful academic outcomes, by encouraging them to have ambitious expectations and by empowering them to build a better future.

Our Approach

Genesis Sun plan to work with schools and organisations throughout the UK, to improve this under representation which has remained almost unchanged since the 1970’s. We aim to address this social challenge because we understand that generations of poor educational achievement, not only impacts individuals, families and communities but also has long-term negative outcomes for our wider society.

We will provide support, encourage peer group networks and grow spheres of professional influence.  We know that interaction with positive role-models is shown to help motivate minds, improve grades and promote positive outcomes.  We will therefore deliver engaging and motivational methods of learning which will be welcomed by our target group due to our pioneering approach within the learning arena.

Programme events will be designed to be uplifting and interactive and include role model representation. We are currently developing complementary technologies and creating hosted programme schedules, which will set our programmes apart from anything else in the marketplace currently and make learning imaginative, interesting and entertaining.

Our aim is to recruit 240 young, black British people within state schools at a regional level by identifying disadvantaged young people who will benefit from a place on our free programmes.  Genesis Sun’s longer-term goal is to support over 5,000 young people over a five-year period, guiding them through education and onto employment.

Through the creation of this unique experience we will be providing a community spirit across regions and a positive environment that will be inspirational, innovative and highly regarded within our community.
