Many of you know that my beautiful mom was diagnosed with ALS almost two years ago.
This journey has been anything but easy. It is so hard to watch my parents wrestle through this trial together.
Every day, she comes face-to-face with new things her body decides it won't do anymore. I watch my dad care for her tirelessly, anticipating her needs, being her hands and feet and doing things for her that we all take for granted (like waking in the middle of the night to do the simple task of turning her over because her muscles no longer will).
I often think of John 15:13, "There is no greater love than to lay one's life down for one's friends". The hard road they are walking truly is a beautiful testimony of love and heartache all rolled into one.
ALS's debilitating affects come in many forms. It has not only been devastating, physically and emotionally, but we are beginning to see that it is devastating financially. Insurance does not cover many of the needs for my mom. Some of the bigger needs being a handicapped accessible shower and a vehicle that will accommodate a wheelchair. Their expenses go well beyond the goal I set, but I am hoping that even this will help lighten their load.
If you know anything about my parents, you know that they would never ask for help. But as I watch them consider the financial burdens in front of them, I know that myself and others would do anything to help ease this if we were able to.
Like a lot of you, I am separated by miles and can't lend a hand to bring a meal, clean a house, run an errand or give my dad time to rest. But I know as a community of people, together, this is our way to help. I would love to ease this financial burden in order to make this hard road a little more bearable.
I know so many of you are in their corner and cheering them on from a distance. I want to thank you for the way that you have loved them. We have all felt carried by your love, your prayers and your encouragement. That is, by far, the greatest gift!
