The Heart of Our Documentary: From Hoops to a Movement
When their dreams of going pro are put to an end, two lifelong hoopers join forces to unite their community through basketball.

In 1995, two friends, Clement Chu and David Kuo, had a simple vision: to give Chinese-Canadian youth a place to belong through basketball. They started the Canadian Chinese Youth Athletic Association (CCYAA), which quickly grew into something much bigger than just basketball. Today, rebranded as the Asian Roots Collective (ARC), their work has expanded far beyond the court, becoming one of Toronto's most influential non-profits.

Our 30-minute documentary will trace this amazing journey from those grassroots beginnings to the organization's star-studded Celebrity Classic, showing how ARC has channeled the power of sport to uplift the Asian diaspora. This is a story about identity, community, and the legacy built one shot at a time.

Introducing the Asian Roots Collective (ARC)
The Asian Roots Collective (ARC) is a leading Toronto non-profit dedicated to empowering the Asian diaspora through sport and community building. ARC is best-known for its large-scale youth development programs, NBA partnerships, and its highly-anticipated Celebrity Classic, which draws top Asian talent like actor Simu Liu and former NBA star Jeremy Lin to amplify its mission.

Our documentary focuses on the organization's three decades of dedication, showcasing how ARC consistently proves that a local, grassroots vision can achieve national influence, and documenting their work to inspire the next generation of community leaders.

Our Objectives
  • Delve into the Founders' Drive: We want to tell the intimate story of how Clement Chu and David Kuo’s initial vision, rooted in basketball, grew to address the broader needs of the Asian-Canadian community.
  • Showcase Empowerment: Highlighting how sport serves as a powerful vehicle for building leadership and community.
  • Celebrate Identity: Providing a platform to celebrate Asian identity and foster community pride.
  • Inspire Leaders: Humanizing the act of community building to motivate a new generation of role models and local advocates.
