If you've worked for DJJ, Gene McKeehan is a familiar name and a familiar face. He dedicated himself to working with at-risk juveniles in the state of Kentucky, in addition to a long tenure with the training branch. He has helped countless kids find a better path and taught thousands of employees how to follow in his footsteps. Anyone who knows him will tell you he is quick with a joke, makes friends everywhere he goes, and makes your day a little better than it was before he showed up.

Gene retired earlier this year. Shortly beforehand, he was diagnosed with cancer. His physicians were optimistic, and he began radiation and chemotherapy immediately. Initial scans looked great, and the tumors had decreased considerably. Sadly, earlier this month, Gene went in for routine scans. Not only had his cancer returned, but it has now spread to his brain, kidney, liver, and lungs.

On September 10th, Gene underwent brain surgery to remove two lesions. Due to the amount of brain matter removed on the first two, the surgeons were forced to leave a third lesion to avoid causing neurological issues. Soon, he will begin another round of chemotherapy and radiation. With the current prognosis, this treatment is geared toward giving Gene more time rather than putting him into remission again. Knowing this, there are some immediate concerns for Gene and his family.

Gene and Lauren fostered two children, and in early 2020, they adopted them. With Gene's current health issues and some unresolved difficulties with his life insurance, their family needs your help. Medical bills, living expenses, mortgage, and financial care for the children are some of the many things your financial donations will go toward to lighten their burden during these difficult times.

I was fortunate enough to meet Gene McKeehan as an academy instructor when I started with DJJ 13 years ago. He was an excellent instructor and put me on a path for success. Eight years later, I was fortunate enough to join Gene as an instructor with the training academy, and he was a kind mentor. What he has been through all of these years is a friend.

"If you're green, you're growing. If you're ripe, you're dying," was a phrase he said often. Even in these dark times, when I call to check on him, he flips the script and checks on me, my wife, and my children. Talking to Gene helps me grow, because on his worst day, he's still concerned for others. We could all learn something from that.

I want you all to know that while Gene and Lauren know I'm setting this up, they never would have asked anyone to do this. When they see a need, they do their best to help. I wanted to return that favor.
