I've put this together on behalf of Brianna and Naziah Lopes as they are currently at the emergency vet with Shelley.
Shelley is a Pyrenees mix, a couple years old. Brianna and Naz adopted her from a rescue about a year ago. She had a litter of puppies before she was rescued, so she has some fluffy mini-mes out there somewhere.
Somehow, in spite of being current on Heartworm prevention, Shelley tested positive for heartworms at her annual vet appointment this month. A couple weeks ago she began the "fast-kill" method of treatment. The medication has made her nauseated and a few days ago she started resisting attempts to get her to eat anything at all. She was prescribed anti-nausea medication and an appetite stimulant yesterday. Later, she got very lethargic, but the medications have possible sedative side effects so we all hoped she would feel better in the morning when she had her next vet appointment.
Unfortunately she was rushed to an emergency treatment center with liver toxicity. The vet believes it is related to her heartworm medications.
Her ALT (liver enzyme) is 2439 (normal is under 125.)
The vet does have a treatment plan, but it involves a 2 day stay at the clinic, with an estimate of $4934 on top of the charges for the HW treatment and regular vet. Her prognosis is 50/50 at this point. But without intervention she likely won't make it. Brianna and Naziah are determined to get her everything she needs, but it would be wonderful if they could get some help!
