Hi all! I am currently studying to receive my MFA in Contemporary Directing Practice at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. Over the past year I have studied different directing techniques for staged theatre and I am now embarking on an exploration of how to apply these techniques to film. I have written a short film script and plan to shoot a selection of scenes at the beginning of June. I have created this Go FundMe campaign to raise enough money to be able to practically achieve shooting these scenes by covering the cost of equipment, transport and food for my cast and crew. Through the completion of this school project I hope to create a calling card to showcase myself as an artist and support my journey as I enter into the creative work field. A young man is stifled by rigid expectations and exacted conformity while serving a Mormon mission. His mission becomes a spiritual limbo where obedience is demanded but authenticity feels impossible. Amid subtle connections with fellow missionaries, fleeting intimacy, and the loneliness of not being fully seen, the young man’s sense of identity strains under the weight of duty and silence. His only solace is the heartfelt letters that he writes to a boy back home. His letters reveal the emotional toll of repression, spiritual confusion and the ache of longing.

I am making this film to unravel my own experiences of growing up queer in a deeply religious environment. The main character is a reflection of myself while on a two year mission in San Jose, California. This film is a love letter to my younger self, that boy that kept me sane for two years and anyone who’s ever had to fight for their identity in a place that refused to see them.
