The Fleming Family

On the early morning of January 21, Ethan was brought to the Chilliwack hospital, after labwork, and a midnight call from the Dr saying that Ethan’s body wasn't producing white blood cells. Ethan and his Mom, Tanna, were then transferred to BC Children's hospital, where more blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy confirmed he has a type of cancer, Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). MDS has a high probability of advancing to leukemia . In Ethan's case, his MDS is the result of the chemotherapy he received in his previous battle with a different type of cancer: Osteosarcoma (Terry Fox cancer). He was diagnosed with this cancer at age 7, and battled for almost 2 years, including multiple chemo treatments, an amputation of his leg with a rotationplasty, and a severe infection post-procedure. What makes this situation even worse, is the chemotherapy typically used for fighting MDS has already been used for treating his osteosarcoma, so Ethan's body won't be able to tolerate much of it. He'll need a bone marrow transplant in the next couple of months.  So begins another battle with cancer for Ethan and his family...Cancer sucks!!
