In Loving Memory of Ron Buchanan

Our dad (Ron Buchanan) suffered a massive heart attack Sunday while he was home alone and was found unconscious. The timeline is not clear on how long he may have gone without oxygen. They placed a stent and a balloon in his main artery Sunday afternoon and he was placed in ICU at Liberty Hospital. He had around 100 seizures Sunday night to Monday morning due to the lack of oxygen. He is medically sedated and on a ventilator. At this point, the doctors are concerned about his neurological function. We finally got the results of dad’s EEG and they were not what they were hoping for. Because they were not able to attempt therapeutic hypothermia, he has continued to struggle with the neurological side effects of cardiac arrest. The doctor is concerned that they have not seen enough clinical improvement in the first 48 hours. The farther away from his initial episode, the harder it is to recover from it. At this point this biggest concern is that he may be in a vegetative state. They have seen some response to stimuli like coughing from his vent tube, leg movement and eye flickering. He is also fighting the ventilator and taking some breaths on his own.

We are trying to stay positive and patient as we wait for more information. At this time, Riley and I are the only visitors allowed in the ICU. If anyone is interested in bringing cards, flowers, food etc, please reach out to me, Riley or Dakota for an address for drop off. We cannot have things delivered to the ICU floor due to their COVID policy.
