Heart Felt Tragic Story
Our friends, The Harris Family were struck with a Horrible Tragedy. On May 19,2014,the lives of Brianna Harris and her family drastically changed over night. Brianna was just finishing up her grade11 year at Terry Fox Secondary School, and was looking forwrd to all the things she had planed for in the summer. She had just completed six weeks of volunteering at Terry Fox Library, and was hoping to find a summer job, get her Learner's license, and go shopping with her best friend for grad dresses. Brianna was a healthy and vibrant sixteen year old girl, until her life was taken over by a rare neurological disorder. Two days prior to her being admitted to the hospital, she complained of severe neck and upper back pain. Her family didn't think much of it, until she woke up that Monday morning and could not feel the left side of her body. Brianna was taken by ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital for tests, and once her MRI results came back, she was immediately rushed to Children's Hospital. By that evening she was in critical condition and paralyzed from the neck down. She was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, and inflammation of the spinal cord. She remained in the intensive care unit at BC Children's Hospital for over three months enduring more than most people ever go through in an entire lifetime. Brianna is now living at an acute rehabilitation centre in Vancouver. She has regained some movement in her right arm, but has a long road ahead of her, due to the severity of Brianna's condition she will require care 24 hours a day,and her mother can no longer work. She will be able to come home at some point the end of November or December, to the familys newly purchased home. They had to sell their beloved home in order to find something more suitable for Brianna and her needs. Her family will need to purchase a wheelchair van as well an electric wheelchair, a wheelchair lift for their home and many numerous expenses and adjustments to accomidate her medical condition. Brianna has had an extremely difficult time being away from home, and her family can not wait until she is back where she belongs.
