Immediate Care needed for Dhanistha devi ACBSP

Donation protected
Dhanistha devi has endured intense difficulty due to five severe ulcers in her stomach and intestines -- with the last two months spent either in hospitals or nursing homes. An initial surgery cauterized the ulcers and she can eat now. However, she remains very weak and can walk only with a cane or walker. Her single room (with no cooking facilities and a shared bathroom) is just barely adequate at this time in her life.  Several devotees in the Bay Area check in regularly to see that she is OK and help in any way they can. Your generosity today will make all the difference to her and help Dhanistha to recover and maybe get a better living situation. She has touched the lives of so many people by distributing Prabhupada's books.

Her history. . . . . . . .

At a time when countless young people were looking for answers, Dhanistha met the devotees in San Francisco. In the months that followed she became engaged in service at the Krishna temple on Valencia St. This center became the northern California headquarters for the Krishna society and the site of many early efforts by Jayananda prabhu and others. The first Rathayatra in America was held here in 1967. Srila Prabhupada took a number of walks with his disciples nearby in the city at Stowe Lake in Golden Gate Park. Dhanistha was initiated directly by Srila Prabhupada at the Valencia St temple in 1974.

The desire to serve her guru’s mission to print Vedic literature inspired Dhanistha to engage in book distribution early on. Sharing the benefits of Bhakti yoga and Srila Prabhupada’s teachings with others is wonderful service and has given her the drive to do this every day in any way she can -- more than 40 years later.

Temple designed by Dhanista devi in Illinois - video

From 1993 to 2009 Dhanistha established a student organization titled: “Bhaktivedanta Society” at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.  As a Prabhupada disciple, she could use her student participation to set up a book distribution table inside the Student Union Bldg. She was well received. In 2002, Bhakti Tirtha Maharaj came to visit and speak on campus, plus a speaking engagement at the most liberal christian Universalist church in town of Carbondale.  It was embraced with grateful reciprocation from everyone. Students from the university shot the 2 minute video (link above) at the little barn like temple she had built on her property by superb Mennonite carpenters. She not only arranged for the construction & design of the temple but personally carved the large Jagannath deities from wood sourced from her farm.

Last year Dhanistha brought her deities, original books and selected memorabilia of Srila Prabhupada back to California, and is staying in Berkeley. Since arriving, Dhanistha has suffered several major health challenges. She has been in the hospital and under a doctor’s care for two months. Dhanistha is doing better now, but she needs your help. It is imperative for her to find a more suitable place in the Bay Area to continue her service.

Her thought is this: we have a tremendous opportunity in San Francisco to continue the legacy of Srila Prabhupada. The objective: to establish a small sanctuary in the city to host home programs with readings, chanting and prasadam -- a time proven recipe that has attracted souls for over four decades. This will also serve as a base for tours of Stowe Lake and the Frederick St temple, along with other areas where Srila Prabhupada walked or visited. Dhanistha is prepared to manage the proposed center and provide a shelter for persons discovering Bhakti -- with simple home programs and tours of sacred places nearby. Your generosity will help her to reach this goal, allowing Dhanistha to serve full time.

In these odd times many people are experiencing hardships, of course, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold. However, in this case, your support will help ensure that one of our society’s most senior members & distributors can recuperate nicely & continue giving out Prabhupada’s books without limitation. No amount is too large or too small. Please give whatever you can.

Thank you.
