The Lumen Project: Share the Light

Donation protected
The Cause:
The simple commodity, electricity, is a privilege that is often taken for granted by most people; it is easily accessible, fairly cheap, and vastly widespread. Believe it or not, a baffling 1.2 Billion people live without electricity even by today’s standards. Energy poverty is, in fact, a very real challenge that needs to be confronted. A shocking 291,000,000 children adapt to a life with no electrical light source to study, read, or expand their knowledge. As a result, they are forced to burn jerry-rigged kerosene lanterns that are hazardous to their lives. The use of Kerosene is the culprit of 1.5 million deaths inflicted by burns and respiratory illnesses annually, of which 62% (about 3 in 5) of the deaths are children. Hope is not lost. A wise woman named Eleanor Roosevelt once said that “it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

Who We Are:
Founded by Rohan Dhamejani, Zackery Moeller, and Gaurav Hegde, The Lumen Project was established with one goal in mind: to help alleviate energy poverty by providing renewable, voltaic solar panel generators to those who lack electricity. Lumens represent how much light you are getting from a bulb. Rohan Dhamejani (CEO) and Zack Moeller (COO) both aspire to become engineers in which they will apply their skills to develop better solutions to make the world are better place. In Rohan’s free time, he is President of the Granite Bay High School Design & Engineering club, where he and his peers design and fabricate ultra fuel efficient vehicles. The club competes at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas annually against universities and high schools from North and South America. His team has won twice. Zackery has been surrounded by tools since he was a little boy, and in his free time, he enjoys learning about electricity and chemistry. Gaurav Hegde’s (CFO) goal is to major in Business and apply his skills to further the betterment of society.  Gaurav is geared towards business as he enjoys economics and how many factors affect the flow of money within an economy.

Our Solution:
We believe there is a unique solution to diminish the problem that is energy poverty. All energy in an ecosystem is connected to and derived from the Sun. Therefore, Solar Energy is the most environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source to provide light to those who lack electricity. Our tangible product is expected to generate up to 360 watt hours of energy in a day, based off our regional calculations. This can power one 60w LED (10w equivalent) light bulb for 36 continuous hours. Our plan is to fabricate a dependable solar powered generator that will provide light to use in hospitals, homes, and schools. This generator will help people to remain productive in the night, furthermore decreasing the poverty level.
With Your Help:
Any donation provided to us is greatly appreciated. All funds earned through this campaign will go towards the development of the Lumen Project and the Lumen1 generator. Our first generator will provide light to people through renewable and dependable solar energy by using solar panels. Your donation will help change and save lives as people will have a dependable and safe light source to study, read, and progress through the night hours. Every $20 donated equates to the spreading of 140 lumens of light. We here at the Lumen Project thank you for your gracious help. For more information, visit: www.thelumenproject.com
