Mawenzi Hospital - Tanzania

Hi, we are Chloe, Maya and Sam. We are student nurses currently volunteering at Mawenzi Hospital in Tanzania as part of our nursing elective. Throughout our shifts at the hospital we have seen a desperate need for more supplies, equipment and medications. Currently if a patient is on the ward and the family can’t afford treatment the children are left with nothing.

We would love to help the children at Mawenzi in any way we can and your donations would be hugely appreciated by us and the staff and families on the ward.

Rather than giving a lump some of money to the hospital we would like to know that our support is going to make a real difference, hence we are planning to speak to ward managers from NICU, General Paeds., Kangaroo care and PICU and collate a list of specific items they actually need, are able to use and have the facilities to stock.

UPDATE: Having spoken with multiple NICU nurses, a recurrent issue that they have raised to us is the need for a sanitary storage space. Currently, things such as medical equipment, baby clothes, bedding and cleaning supplies are left in boxes on dirty floors harbouring infection. Most of the babies on the ward suffer from serious infections that they don’t always survive from. Hence, by creating a sanitary storage facility we can help to minimise infection and reduce damage to equipment in the long term. We hope to help renovate their stock room by building secure shelving cabinets which can be stocked with neonatal specific items, as sadly most of the current equipment is not suitable for babies. We are excited to see how our support can enhance the quality of care delivered to babies not just in the short-term but also in the long-term!

Thank you for your support,
Chloe, Maya and Sam
