Whether you know her as Ms. Callaway, Momma C, Gay, or any other nickname, our beloved friend, teacher and mentor needs your support.
On January 7, Gay suffered a serious fall in her home that resulted in a shattered leg and knee, and a fractured vertebra. She was immediately transported to the hospital and received surgery to her leg and knee, and is currently in a recovery facility. She is unable to move without assistance and must wear a support brace at all times to stabilize her back. If her recovery goes well as we hope it does, the goal is that she will transition to a walker after 6 weeks of recuperation and physical therapy, and return home to continue to regain her strength and mobility with continued in-home care.
Unfortunately, there are no facilities covered by her insurance that are capable of providing the intensive care her condition requires, so her inpatient care (optimistically 6 weeks, possibly longer) and much of her in-home care for the remaining months of her recovery must be covered 100% out-of-pocket. Gay’s family and friends are working hard to transition her this week to a trusted facility where she will be able to receive the level of care and support she critically needs at this time.
This is a fluid situation given all of the logistics with the care facility, insurance and all the rest, but what we know for sure is that Gay is facing many months of recovery, and life will be very different for the foreseeable future. As always, she is strong and determined and fighting every day to regain her strength as she goes through intensive physical therapy. She is so grateful for all of the calls, texts, and messages of love and support she has received.
But this is a lot for anyone to face, and there are significant physical and financial challenges to be overcome as she moves forward. We all know Gay is the first one to reach out and lend a helping hand to others; she cares deeply about her friends, family, and all her beloved students whose lives she has touched in her decades of teaching and she will do anything to support them.
Now is our opportunity to support her in her hour of need, and many of you have asked how you can help ease the burden she is facing. One of the best ways to do so is to contribute financially to help offset the medical costs she will face as she receives inpatient treatment, and for her in-home care when she returns home. Any amount is deeply appreciated, and no sentiment or expression of support is too small.
