4/14 update: It’s with broken hearts we said goodbye to G Saturday. He was strong and inspirational in his battle. He passed having gotten to experience some of the greatest joys in life. He met his first best friend at 3 across the street and never looked back. He created imaginative and mischievous epic adventures, first, in our little neighborhood on Halvorsen, then at Jefferson, and Mac, and finally, at North Medford HS collecting loyal friends and memories he recalled frequently with humor and pride. G found true love, true friendships with boys who had his back till his last breath, family in high school sports, getting a license, and a myriad of other teen shenanigans that are the memories and times we all long for in adulthood. As his parents we are forever greatful for this. He loved and was loved.

We are again asking for our community’s support to allow us (Joe, Megan and Ryan) time to grieve as well as help with the funeral costs. With both of us needing to be off to support G through his 9 month battle, our incomes have been severely impacted and our leave used up. We are left with bills no parent should have to pay and yet we are here. Any amount helps and is received humbly and with deep gratitude from us and our family

Love,
Joe, Megan, and Ryan

For those that know us, you know that we are the helpers, we are the ones who rally for our people and have helped our community for 20 years in social services. You know that G is funny and kind and has been a fantastic older brother to help Ryan understand the world. If you’ve been privileged to meet Ryan, you’ll never forget him and he will be the first to tell you Gavin is the best and is his best friend.

It’s with a broken heart that we are humbly asking for our community’s help. Our son, Gavin, who turned 16 on the 8th of August, was diagnosed on August 9th with a rare and aggressive cancer at Doernbechers Children’s Hospital in Portland. The English language does not provide adequate words to describe the devastation we are all feeling, as I’m sure many of you are feeling as well.

As we navigate this nightmare as a family and try to create some normalcy for Ryan, the costs are mounting and insurance only does so much.

G, as we call him, is in the fight of his life. G has been nothing short of heroic these last 2 weeks as we are all acclimating to our new reality, but him the most pointedly.

So many folks have expressed a desire to help, and G loves to know his people are out there holding him up, cheering him on, and wanting to help him out.

If you can and are are able we would be grateful for any financial help you can offer to help with the cost of treatment, accommodations and travel costs so we can get him out of a hospital setting and allow him to get daily fresh air and be with his dogs and friends at home. Our hope is that we could just travel for treatment once we stabilize and get out of Doernbecher's. The “normal” costs of our bills and maintaining our life in Medford, with the new costs of living in hospital are adding up. As everyone knows, eating out everyday is not ideal or cheap, and hospital food is not where it is at! Finally, Joe and I will be off work for the foreseeable future to walk with G through this fight he never asked for and most definitely doesn’t deserve.

I wish we weren’t here, I wish we weren’t asking, but we are. As we have preached to so many over the years to ask for help when they need it, we are asking for your help now.

We appreciate all the love that everyone has shared since our world changed with a lifeflight to Doernbecher's on August 6.

Megan and Joe (and G and Ryan)
