Gavan Cyr's Recovery

Donation protected
I am fundraising for my cousin Gavan Cyr, who is currently facing an urgent medical situation. Gavan is 18 years old and has been fighting the same genetic condition that took his mother's life when he was 3. Gavan loves to play sports with friends, travel with his family, and he works in construction at Sullivan Bros. Remodeling. Due to this ongoing medical condition, recently reaching a critical state, he spent five days in the ICU fighting for his life and continues to be hospitalized. As a result, Gavan and his parents are missing a significant and undetermined amount of work, and facing insurmountable medical bills. He will need additional procedures and surgeries shortly, resulting in a substantial financial burden. Gavan and his family would graciously appreciate donations to assist them during this difficult time. Gavan has a long road ahead of him, and we thank you in advance for your support in helping him fight.

More details about Gavan's current situation:

Gavan's medical journey has been a long one, stemming from his diagnosis of FAP when he was 14. He had a successful total colectomy at 16, and has been fortunate enough to fully recover without complications of FAP up until this point.

Thursday night, Gavan started having symptoms of massive internal bleeding and was brought to the Emergency Room. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where several medical teams worked together to try to locate and stop the bleeding.

Friday morning Gavan was sedated, intubated, and placed on a ventilator so further diagnostic tests could be done. After an endoscopy and abdominal CT scan, they believed they had found the cause of the internal bleed, a 4.6 cm tumor that had interfered with the blood flow exiting his spleen.

They did not believe Gavan could survive surgical intervention and expected he would not live beyond a few more hours.

Interventional Radiology then came up with the idea for a 2 part intervention to open up the blood flow of the spleen and plug the arteries that were seeping blood into his stomach. They were very clear that the intervention could be unsuccessful, and he was likely to not survive it.

Thankfully, due to the great work of the Interventional Radiology team, he did survive, despite them being unable to do the first procedure successfully. They were able to do an alternative procedure to cut off blood flow to the spleen.

At this point, the hope is that he will get strong enough to tolerate the removal of his spleen before the impending infection that causes sepsis.
After that, a plan will be formulated to address the tumor and any damage it has caused to surrounding organs.

In best case scenario, this will be a very long and challenging road to recovery, with multiple surgeries and interventions. Gavan is still fighting, and we are hopeful he will come out of this.
