For those of you who know my mom you would know that she is an amazing woman. She was a seamstress, a cook, a wonderful wife to my father Danny, a grandma of two and one on the way, but most importantly to me, she's a mother to not only myself but my 4 other siblings as well. She was a woman who valued family and wasn't afraid to stick up for us. She was caring, hardworking and can even be stubborn at some times. She was a blessing to everyone around her.
In my understanding, what my mom went through wasn't easy. There's new things we learned everyday and things that changed often.
On Wednesday, August 17 my mom started complaining of just a normal cold. Headaches, coughing, fevers, and other symptoms that seemed normal at the time. Given how she felt, my dad took her to the Honokaa Emergency room just to have her checked up on. She was released the next day to go home, but her symptoms seemed to not get any better. Given this, he decided to take her to the Waimea Emergency room instead, but to much of our luck, she was released once again. They didn't think much of her situation and declared it to be normal. But on Friday, August 19, she was right back into the Waimea ER once again. Still, no one knew exactly what was going on.
As my dad says, this was the point he began to see her at her worst.
That same night, my mom was medivaced to Queens Medical Center in Oahu, where she was officially diagnosed with Sepsis.
For those who are unfamiliar with what Sepsis is, it is an infection that occurs in your bloodstream, and has a major effect on the rest of your body.
The first week being at Queens she fought through this infection and a medical induced coma. After awakening a week from being down, she began baby steps into her recovery. She started to regain some of her body's strength slowly, helping her exercise her lungs in a cardiac chair, regaining her memory, moving her body, trying to talk again and slowly learning to swallow on her own. Day by day she was impressing us with her ability to power through this infection. Despite the complications that still arose, there was progress being made.
The progress, to us, was an amazing hope and joy of her recovery. But just as we thought we were in the clear and all that could be left for her was therapy things took a turn. On September 15, she fell back into a coma.
During these tough times, its been hard on all of our family. As for myself (Danika), as well as my elder brothers Cameron, and Dylan, and younger sisters Dynesha and Daeleah, we are all so overwhelmed with the lack of being around our entire family. It was hard work just to get all of us up to Oahu at once to be reunited as a family. My sisters had to go three weeks without being able to see their own parents, and it was heartbreaking to have to explain to such young kids what was happening to our mom. It's been hard flying back and forth, balancing our individual lives without having our mother around like we are so used to.
All that we can do now, is hope and pray for our families recovery. She's in the hands of the lord and my family and I know that what he has done, though we might not understand it now, is for a reason. We may not know the why's, or the how's, or explanations for any of this, but we do know one thing, and that is that my mom was a fighter! She's been a fighter since day one.
We've received so much love and prayers for her so far, and we couldn't be any more thankful for the support and the donations that people have blessed us with. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far and kept us in their prayers, and who will continue to keep us in them.
Bonnie Gaspar, whether she was a family member, a friend, or just a stranger to you, she was my mom, my siblings mom, my fathers wife, and a blessing to lives of everybody that she has touched. We ask that you don't remember her sickness but remember her heart. We ask that you remember her as the beautiful and full of life person she was. We remember her as the woman who would do just about anything for anyone she loved. She will be missed more than anything in the world to our family. But her life is well appreciated for the direction, the love and the affection that she filled into each and every one of her children. Our family is mourning the loss of somebody that was beyond loved. May she be remembered. May she continue to be loved. We will forever hold, Bonnie Gaspar in our hearts.
We ask that you keep my mom in your hearts forever. And we ask that you keep our family in your prayers through this tough time. God bless.
