Those that know David know that he, like most bikers, can’t resist taking his motorcycle out of the garage when the sun is shining and the weather is cool. On Tuesday, September 29, 2020 he decided to ride the bike to work, where he was quickly becoming known as the “cool math teacher” by his 6th and 7th graders. However, his ride home from school that day has caused his and his family's lives to be changed forever. At around 4:30 p.m. he was involved in a serious wreck on I-30. Impacts with an SUV and a concrete barrier left him with a severely broken right tibia, a temporal skull fracture, a brain bleed, broken facial bones, a broken nose, a broken rib, a dislocated right ankle, and a shattered right foot. Not to mention the many torn tendons and ligaments throughout his right leg, several large gashes, and road rash scattering his body. Despite all these injuries, we have no doubt God had his protective hand on him the entire time! This is evident in not only his life being spared, but in allowing him to remain conscious and coherent the entire time.
The extent of his injuries required the first of many surgeries to take place only 15 hours after the accident, and lasted 9 hours. After which, he remained in the ICU until he underwent a second surgery on Friday, October 2nd. He was then transferred from the ICU to a Trauma Care room where he will remain while more surgeries will be scheduled over the coming weeks. He has received multiple blood transfusions to help replenish what has been lost, and we have faith God will continue to restore what his body needs. We are blessed beyond measure to have him still here with us and are eager to witness God move on this very long road to recovery.
David's spirit has remained high and his faith unwavering. We are praising God each day for the unbelievable strength David has shown. He will spend an unknown amount of weeks in the hospital, before he is transferred to a rehabilitation hospital where he will stay until he is strong enough to come home. Doctors do not expect him to be able to wear a shoe, much less put weight on his right leg for a minimum of 12-18 months. The immediate need is the rising hospital bills that have already begun calling, the two surgeries that have already taken place, the future surgeries he will need, and an electric wheelchair that will allow him to be mobile and provide the hope of returning to work as soon as he possibly can. He has not stopped asking about his students since arriving in the ER, so we know he is eager and determined to get back to them as fast as he can. We know that with God all things are possible!
Our family asks more than anything for your continued prayers throughout this journey. We will live each day by faith knowing the Lord will provide and meet each need according to His will. Thank you for your support and prayers!
