I am posting this for my brother-in-law Gary Carsten. The following is submitted by my sister Marlys explaining Gary's condition. "August 2014, I took my husband to the hospital, probably with walking pneumonia again. After 5 hours, we left with instructions to check into Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN the next morning. There they removed fluid from around the heart only to find it was full of cancer. Stage IV lung cancer. It already had spread from lungs to numerous lymph nods and left adrenal gland.
Gary started chemo Sept 16 2014. This continued till April, when this chemo quit killing the cancer. We continued with a different chemo which was to hard on him. He retained water which caused open sores (his deep vein thrombosis acted up), developed pneumonia, mouth sores, weakness, loss of appetite. They removed fluid from around the lungs. This all resulted in hospital stays, home health care (physical therapy, nurses, wound care, occupational therapy) . He then took some time off to heal his body for more chemo treatments. After a CT scan they found the cancer has moved into the sternum. More chemo. This next chemo did not work as well as it was suppose to. An MRI confirmed the cancer moved into the spine and has deteriorated a disc in his upper back putting him at risk of paralysis. Gary is now receiving radiation to shrink that tumor. Then they want to try yet another chemo next.
Gary is ornery and stubborn, not willing to let the cancer win. At least for as long as possible.
He regretfully had to quit his job he enjoyed. So many trips to the Drs. It's amazing how much time and gas is spent for this. (Also the dr. bills). I miss a lot of work to make sure he gets to where he needs to be.
Ironically 11 years ago he quit smoking so he would be able to watch his granddaughters walk down the aisle.
Just don't know what God has planned for you."
The money raised will be used for medical expenses and transportion to and from appointments.
Any funds raised will mean alot to Marlys and Gary. After a year and a half of treatments and appointments, they are feeling it financially due to their income being greatly decreased with Gary not working and Marlys working parttime so she can care for him.
