Gary Hughley’s GBS Battle
Donation protected
On December 30, 2021 Gary's entire life changed in the blink of an eye. He woke up during the night and couldn't feel his feet, and later in the day couldn't stand, so he was brought by ambulance to a hospital close to home. That hospital quickly realized that they weren't going to be able to provide the proper medical attention, so Gary was brought by ambulance to Regions Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).
Within the next 24 hours, Gary was paralyzed from the neck down and through the next five days, Gary was having trouble breathing and was put on a ventilator and ultimately ended up being fully intubated for three months. During this time, he went into full cardiac arrest two times and needed to have a defibrillator put in. He also has had several lung infections, pneumonia, and sepsis. He moved from Regions Hospital to Regency Hospital, and ultimately on to Aurora for rehabilitation. All of this included multiple ambulance rides, none of which are covered by insurance.
On the positive side, Gary started regaining limited mobility but still has a very long road ahead of him. Sadly, another blow came when insurance told Gary and Jeanne that they would no longer cover the cost of his stay in a care facility or his physical therapy. Daily costs are at least $500 per day. This is where we are looking for some help so Gary and Jeanne can focus on Gary getting healthy and not worry about finances right now.
