On the night of June 9th, Gary fell from the top step on the second floor of his home to the first floor, landing in the foyer. He was taken to INOVA Loudoun Hospital Emergency Department, where he was diagnosed with several cuts, bruises, and a lower lumbar 1 vertebrae fracture. While waiting for a surgical consultation on his back fracture, Gary lost consciousness due to blood pooling on his brain. This required Gary to be airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital for emergency brain surgery and trauma care. After 5 days at Fairfax, Gary’s trauma team and family agreed the best level of care could be given to Gary at the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta, GA.
With his wife, Lisa by his side, Gary was transported by medical jet to Shepherd Rehabilitation Center on June 23rd, where he has been receiving daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as around the clock medical care. In addition to the injuries sustained in his fall, Gary has fought a gallbladder infection and suffered from gout in several joints. Both caused Gary to lose his appetite and resulted in having a feeding tube inserted into his stomach to receive daily nutrients.
Gary is making progress towards a recovery. However, it is too early to tell what the long-term damage is from his injuries. Gary will need out-patient therapy once he returns to Virginia; and will need modifications made to his home to accommodate a wheelchair. Lisa is taking a significant amount of unpaid leave from her employer, Formed Families Forward to care for Gary when he comes home. Lisa will need to travel to Shepherd for 1 – 2 weeks of training on how to care for Gary before he is discharged.
As you can imagine, this situation has presented Gary and Lisa with unplanned expenses and stress. We would like to encourage you to consider donating money. We know Gary and Lisa will appreciate you doing whatever is comfortable for you.
