Gary Deckard for Sally, his widow

Hi,

My name is Debra. Recently, my dear friend, Sally McGreevey Deckard, unexpectedly lost her husband of ~30 years. Gary spent his career in ministry and religious education. Due to many chronic diseases, his medical expenses exceeded insurance coverage and prevented him from getting life insurance. For his funeral, Sally traveled nine hours to have the service in Gary's church of his youth.

What I most admire about Sally is how she views her vocation as an educator. She believes education is a way to accompany people to help them explore and uncover what gives their life meaning. In her roles as a parish coordinator of religious education, instructor of world religions, or a high-school catechist, this has been her ethos.

From my experience, I know we need more educators like Sally. In her current position as support staff for online education, she encourages a culture of care where faculty uphold academic rigor while helping students overcome obstacles to success. Such a philosophy makes the world a better place for both.

Sally and I have journeyed together through becoming Associates and then Covenant Companions of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. She truly lives the mission and vow of humility.

Just like Mr. Holland's Opus, people like Gary and Sally can never know how many lives they changed through their ministerial positions. Sally is very grateful for the prayers, love, and support folks have shared in her time of widowhood. If you can donate any amount, it would ease her burden.
