Gary Chapman's fight against brain cancer

"You never think it's going to happen to you."

June 2nd was the day it happened to us.

Our dad went from having a little weakness and numbness in his left side to
barely being able to lift his hand or bear weight on his leg. We rushed him
to the hospital thinking we were dealing with a stroke or possible heart
attack. We were not prepared to hear that they found lesions on his brain.
He was admitted to the stroke unit at Broward Health North.

And then, on June 3rd, his 65th birthday, our healthy, vibrant dad was told he had a 3.5cm tumor on his brain, and that it was most likely cancer. They
scheduled a surgery to remove the tumor the following Monday.

The following days were filled with tears and uncertainty, but because of
who our dad is, they were also filled with laughter and positivity. Every tech, nurse, and doctor was endeared to his infectious energy. We were covered in countless prayers during those days, and we truly felt them.

Surgery day went about as well as it could've, and our brilliant surgeon was able to remove 100% of the visible tumor. Unfortunately, it was confirmed
that it was indeed cancer, and it is a scary one - it is aggressive with a high chance of recurrence. It's hard to say it out loud. Our dad has brain cancer. Glioblastoma multiforme.

As it stands right now, our dad has been in the hospital for over a week, has started physical and occupational therapy for the deficits on his left side,
and is waiting to begin radiation and chemo. He has kept an incredibly
positive attitude throughout and has put his full effort into all his therapies.
Our mom has been staying overnights at the hospital since he went in, and will be out of work indefinitely to be there for our dad.

Our dad has always been an active part of any community he is involved in, and we have felt that come back to us tenfold in this last week in the form
of prayers and compassion, and we will be forever thankful. We are asking you to continue to support us in any way you are willing. Firstly through
prayer; we have felt a Divine peace throughout this all, and we know that's
because of all you covering us in prayer. And secondly, we are setting up
this gofundme so that those who have asked, and are willing and able have a place to give to help take the financial stress off of our parents during this journey that is sure to be a marathon. We also want to be able to use this
platform to keep all of you updated.

Our dad is the youngest 65 year old we know, and we'd like to keep him
around for a bunch more. He is also a:
  • beloved 5th grade teacher at Westminster Academy for 20 years
(says he's got at least 5 more years in him!)
  • master kayak fisherman
  • KidStuf leader at our church
  • son
  • brother
  • uncle
  • best friend
  • involved dad and grandpa
  • husband
  • Christ follower
  • FIGHTER.

We know there is a huge fight ahead, but if anyone can conquer this, its
our dad.

You will not have to fight this battle.Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow and the Lord will be with you.
