Gary Braunbeck's Dental Expenses
Donation protected
A trip to the emergency dentist at the end of August required the extraction of Gary's last two remaining lower molars, leaving him only the cuspids and incisors on the bottom--teeth that even in a best-mouth scenario are not up to full-time chewing duty, and definitely not in Gary's situation.
Since the six remaining lower teeth are also not up to the task of anchoring a partial, the dentist has recommended extracting them and fitting him with a full lower denture. All told, that is going to be around $2,200 that insurance won't cover, not including any surprises they find along the way. He already got $250 of surprises today when he needed more x-rays.
He is getting the work done at the OSU dental school, which is the most economical option but requires payment as services are rendered. The first stage, $900 worth of extractions, is scheduled for September 14. About about three weeks after that, they'll take impressions ($100), and a couple weeks after that the denture ($1200) will be ready.
Even if you can't donate financially, please spread the word. I am also looking for diabetic-friendly no-chew recipes, because he's staring down close to two months without opposing teeth and is already just about sick of yogurt and scrambled eggs.
In the photo, Gary is the one on the right. He is so self-conscious about his smile that just about the only way to get a picture of him for the last year or so has been photo ops with his great-nephew and/or great-niece.
