You never think it will happen to you…. But then it does. Nothing could prepare our family for seeing Garrett in that hospital bed, unconscious, with that many tubes attached to him, helping stabilize him.
Garrett was a passenger in a single-vehicle rollover accident on March 5th. He had to be cut out of the car and was care flighted to Baylor Dallas. When he arrived, the medical staff did not think he would live.
The injuries were catastrophic: skull fractures, bleeding on the brain (TBI), and every bone in his face fractured in multiple places. He was intubated and not responsive. He has since fought very hard and has made giant steps toward recovery. He has had a craniotomy to repair one of the brain bleeds and close one skull fracture, along with a 13.5-hour surgery to reconstruct his face. He still has to have 2-4 more surgeries to complete the process. Garrett is unable to open his right eye and has minimal vision in the left. He has to eat through a straw as all of his teeth were damaged/removed, and the plates in his jaw do not allow him to open his mouth very far. Garrett has a very long way to go with therapy, surgery, etc. He will be unable to work for the next 12-24 months, depending on the scheduling of the remaining surgeries.
Garrett had recently started a new job and did not have medical insurance. We recently discovered that the vehicle he was a passenger in was uninsured, and the parties involved are being less than cooperative. We are left with no choice but to seek legal help to get assistance for Garrett and are reviewing all options. As everyone knows, this is a very long, time-consuming and stressful process. In the interim, with Garrett unable to work and not having insurance, he still has bills to pay, and we may have to pay out of pocket for medical and day-to-day living expenses for the next year+.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out and prayed for Garrett and our family. We can attest that the prayers are working! Any amount will help; this is a marathon, not a sprint, and his expenses will be ongoing.
Garrett is a living miracle but will need continued assistance (spiritual and financial) in the months to come. Garrett wants me to thank everyone that has reached out and for all of their help.
