It could happen to any of us. A young man with his whole life ahead of him is driving home late on a dark unlit road, just around the corner from home and suddenly, in a flash, the car careens, flips and the young man lies there, breathing, his beautiful body mashed, head, pelvis, spinal and internal injuries unknown. He is airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center.
This is not a pretend scenario. It is exactly what happened in Freeport, Grand Bahama to the son of one of the most beloved and respected families in the community. The 18-year- old is Gareth Kirkby, son of Sarah Kirkby who, despite a full-time career, is at the heart of worthy fund-raising efforts, and Nigel Kirkby, teacher and rugby coach for more than 25 years in The Bahamas.
Their son, young Gareth, graduates from high school this year and was set to attend MMI in September, excited to be learning marine mechanics and training for a career in a trade needed in The Bahamas.
Today, he lies in a hospital, bills mounting along with a team of doctors’ hopes. Young healthy men, they say, have a real chance at full recovery. Gareth may be among the fortunate, but there will be intense physio, starting with learning how to speak again.
No one truly knows how expensive his treatment and recovery will be. Please fund Gareth’s recovery.
His parents, who did not seek crowd funding, but were touched when friends said they would, will face huge medical expenses. Every dollar donated will be accounted for. More importantly, every dollar will help Gareth take one more step toward being that young man, full of joy, and his whole life ahead of him.
