GARDEN HILL ANISININEW NATION FIRE EVACUATION

“Smoke on the Water: The Evacuation of Garden Hill First Nation”

In the remote northern reaches of Manitoba, nestled between lakes and dense forest, lies the community of Garden Hill First Nation.

But this summer, the peace of Garden Hill was shattered. A massive forest fire, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, crept dangerously close to the community. The sky turned orange, ash began to fall like snow, and the smell of smoke became impossible to ignore.

With the fire threatening homes, infrastructure, and the fuel supply, leadership made the difficult but necessary decision: a full evacuation. Families were quickly gathered and transported to safety. Some were flown out, while others made the journey by boat and vehicle to nearby safe zones. Parents held their children close, not knowing when—or if—they would return to their homes.

The evacuation was a heartbreaking moment for many. Elders wept as they left the land they had lived on their entire lives. Youth tried to stay strong, helping where they could. Leadership worked around the clock, coordinating emergency shelters, food, and medical support in host communities.

Even in the face of crisis, the strength of Garden Hill’s people shone through. They looked after each other. They prayed together. And they reminded the world that their Nation may be small in numbers, but it is mighty in spirit.

Garden Hill Anisininew Nation: population 5500

My people have been displaced in Red Cross shelters across Winnipeg. We have community members who are in need of proper bed care. We have elders, babies, young families, who are tired and can’t sleep in the shelters.

Every donation, big or small, will go directly toward covering accommodations, food, snacks, and essential needs for our families during this difficult time. Your support means the world to us—thank you for standing with our community when we need it most.
