Gage is the sweet and fun loving 5 year old son of Jessie and Johnny Whittleman. He has recently undergone surgery for Chiari Malformation. Here is his story:
Due to a noticeable dip in 1 shoulder, the Whittleman’s decided to have Gage looked at for Scoliosis. In the first MRI, they found that he has Chiari Malformation Type 1 and a spinal cyst called Syringomyelia, a syrinx. The syrinx was causing the scoliosis because the syrinx makes his spinal cord unable to remain straight and affects the nerves with permanent nerve damage being a big cause of concern.
They were then referred immediately to meet with a neurosurgeon and discovered that he not only has the chiari malformation 1 but his syrinx (cyst in spinal cord) is one of the largest the Dr had seen and it was running all the way down his spine, not just in place.
Doctors were shocked at how well Gage was functioning because his Chiari was located in the cerebellum of the brain which controls a lot of things like balance, speech, etc and Gage has exceptional hand-eye coordination and balance.
He underwent surgery on the morning of March 20 and is on the long and at times, very painful road to recovery.
We want the Whittleman family to be able to be with Gage during his recovery and to not be crippled by their mounting medical bills. So many people have offered to help in any way possible. They are reluctant to accept help of any kind but contributing to their medical expenses is the best way to help them at this time. And of course your prayers. They believe in the power of prayer and ask that you join them in praying for a speedy recovery with no complications.
