Gael, a 12-year-old living with a heart transplant. Gael was born with Hypoplastic left heart and on the 6th day of his birth he had his first surgery. The next 10 years of his life would consist of being in and out of the hospital having multiple surgeries and endless amount of painful procedures that he had to endure. In November 2016 the doctor’s told Gael’s parents that he would need a heart transplant and that he would have to be put on a waiting list but because of the type of condition and heart transplant he needed the waiting period would be longer than normal. The doctors were not optimistic and they told his parents to enjoy their child as much as they could because the future didn’t look too good for him. With that said, April 2017 Gael’s parents received a call that the heart that was a match for Gael was found and that they needed to admit him to the hospital immediately. Gael was admitted and received the heart transplant 24 hours after they received the call. The parents were told that the surgery would take 3-4 hours but Gael’s surgery took 13 long hours. It was the longest heart transplant that Loma Linda Hospital ever had according to the feedback his parents received. He struggled with so many complications after surgery that the doctors didn’t have too many hopes for him but as always with his willingness to live, he would surprise every single doctor and nurse that cared for him through this life changing event.
Now his doctors have referred Gael to a neuropath, Mark Buseell is the name of the neuropath, because he has problems walking. After his heart transplant, the doctors were focused with his heart and they gave him a lot of medication to send the blood flow to the upper part of the body, like organs and brain, and with lacked oxygen to the lower extremities the feet and legs and being in bed for 8 months, he had no mobility and the nerves and circulatory system had damaged. Right now, they are helping him to recover mobility but they have realized that just touching his feet produces pain, so they sent him to this specialist who has new techniques that other doctors do not have. The problem is that no insurance covers these therapies and he need help of his friends and family and anyone that may be kind enough to provide a little something for his therapy sessions. His wiliness to survive and his endurance is something that I will also cherish the rest of my life because he has impacted me more that I would of ever believed. Hope you can help him and thank you in advance for your support and generosity!
