Gabriel’s Freedom Bed

Most everyone who knows Gabe is aware that he has Prader Willi Syndrome. With this syndrome comes a lot of health issues. One of which is scoliosis. Early this year it was determined that Gabe’s spine was at curve that needed surgical intervention. If we chose not to do the surgery the curvature of his spine could eventually bend to a point where his lungs and heart would be squeezed. Affecting his breathing and his hearts ability to pump. On April 21 he had rods put in his back to correct the spinal curve. Pre-op was a struggle to say the least. Gabe did not want to have the surgery. Post-op Gabe could not feel or move his legs. The Surgeon and Anesthesiologist did not know why. The surgery went smoother then expected. The nerve conduction monitoring throughout the procedure didn’t show any significant event. The day after surgery Gabe went back into the OR to have the rods removed. The thought was did the rods correct the spine but stretch the spinal cord causing paralysis. Four days later Gabe went into surgery for the 3rd time to have the rods put back in. Post-op Gabe did not regain movement or feeling from his waist down. Gabe spent an additional week in the hospital and has since returned back to Devils Lake. He is in the nursing home working with therapy. Gabe’s life has changed tremendously. His home will need ramps, lifts and other equipment. He will need several caregivers during the day time. The one thing I wish for Gabriel is a Freedom Bed. The freedom bed self repositions a patient while their sleeping. He will need to be repositioned every 2 hours at a minimum to prevent pressure ulcers. I debated on doing a go fund me account but after I spoke with the representative from the freedom bed makers they suggested I do a go fund me. The bed it’s self is around 40,000- 45,000. Insurance usually won’t pay because he doesn’t have a pressure ulcer. Go figure
