Gabriela has been living in central Iowa since she was three years old, and a resident of Story City for the last two years. She has three children, ranging in age from 11 to 20.
In December of 2019, Gabriela was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, and two short weeks later learned she also had breast cancer. Throughout 2020, Gabriela underwent 12 chemo treatments as well as a 10-hour surgery to remove the colon cancer.
On January 12th of this year, Gabriela was given the devastating news that her cancer had spread to her lungs and pelvis and has another biopsy scheduled for today, January 18th, to determine the best course of action. Most likely she will need additional surgeries and chemo treatments.
You may have seen Gabriela and her family fundraising previously with tamale sales and car washes, however with her declining health and low winter temperatures, these are not options at the moment. All funds raised will directly support Gabriela and her family as she navigates this difficult journey from paying for medical bills that are not covered by insurance, to travel expenses to and from chemo treatments.
Gabriela has maintained a very positive outlook throughout the last year and is very appreciative of any and all support. As we learn more about Gabriela's prognosis and condition, we will continue to make updates here.
