Gabriel wants to live and needs help to fight cancer!

Gabriel, 17 years old, was diagnosed with Sarcoma in his right foot in the beginning of 2020. He went through traditional chemotherapy, but the tumor evolved to a deadly level and resulted in having his leg amputated (below his knee) in June 2020. After this traumatic surgery, he had to return to the hospital for a few weeks after a major infection (Osteomyelitis) and underwent another surgery.

Once recovered, with help and financial support through crowdfunding, we were able to buy a prosthesis, as well as, all recovery treatment necessary to rehabilitate him walking again. We are so grateful for that wonderful gift!

Since then, doctors have actively monitored his rehabilitation and ensured he is taking appropriate/specific medicine for his treatment.

Unfortunately, in October 2021, Gabriel was re-diagnosed with cancer, this time with two tumors in his head.

In October, Gabriel went through another surgery to remove the tumors in his head. They were really close to his brain. While at home recovering, Gabriel was readmitted to the hospital for 10 days due to a bacterial infection that affected the stiches in his head (he had a few dozen). This resulted in Gabriel’s stitches being replaced.

As per recent tests performed in December 2021, another tumor appeared on one of his lungs and soon he will have to go through another surgery to remove it. Additionally, he will undergo radiotherapy on his head.

Less than two months has passed since Gabriel went through a surgery to remove the tumors in his head and another tumor appeared, again in his head. Besides, there is already the tumor that was recently detected in his lungs.

Doctors said that another surgery is not feasible at this moment as he went through a surgery just recently and he is still recovering from that. This time doctors decided for a combination of quimioteraphy and radiotherapy.

Gabriel has been assisted by specialized oncologists in Brazil, who have made it clear that not much more can be done in the country. This is a rare case that affects only 1% of the world’s population. Treatment in Brazil consists of monitoring, tumor removal (which ultimately results in mutilation) and radiotherapy sessions. We are grateful that his vital organs have not been affected during the surgeries that have been performed thus far.

Recommended Modern treatment

There is a genetic therapy treatment where genes are transferred from a molecule to another.

These are the body’s defense cells, which are extracted from the patient and molded in the laboratory to fight their own tumor. They are then infused back into the patient. That is, they act by reprogramming the patient’s own cells against the disease.

Challenges

The recent modern treatment described above is not available in Brazil for several reasons (lack of infrastructure to perform this procedure and lack of investment and number of local cases).

On top of that, this treatment needs to be done in a specialized center, because the side effects of this treatment can be major.

Our fight

With the help of friends and family from Brazil, Gabriel arrived in Hoffman States on 01.04.2023 in search of a study in Chicago, at Northwestern Medicine, in which Gabriel is eligible and which will provide him with an 80% chance of life.

The treatment is estimated at $88,118.25 (according to the budget below) but we do not have this resource!

Gabriel wants this chance! He wants to live! We ask for help! Time is not your ally, but we continue with the faith and hope that this dream will come true.

Gabriel, 18 anos, foi diagnosticado com um Sarcoma específico de partes moles que acometeu seu pé direito no início de 2020. Fez quimioterapia tradicional mas o tumor progrediu de tal forma que inviabilizou a extração do tumor fazendo-se necessário a amputação abaixo do joelho em junho de 2020, aos 15 anos.

Após essa cirurgia traumática ele voltou a ser internado pois teve uma grave infecção, uma Osteomelite, tendo que sofrer nova intervenção cirúrgica.

Após sua recuperação, com a ajuda de muitos amigos e parentes conseguimos através de uma “vaquinha” a prótese e o tratamento necessário para que ele voltasse a andar. Foi algo incrível e só temos gratidão no coração!

Desde então, ele vinha sendo monitorado e tomando um remédio especifico (quimioterapia em cápsula) para conter a doença.

Infelizmente em outubro de 2021 o câncer se manifestou novamente em dois pontos distintos da cabeça.

Gabriel passou por uma nova cirurgia para extração dos tumores em Outubro de 2021. Por muito pouco o sarcoma não atingiu o cérebro. Ele estava se recuperando mas após uma semana da cirurgia foi internado por mais 10 dias devido a uma bactéria que atingiu o local e abriu alguns pontos. Foi necessário uma sutura (novos pontos).

Com menos de 2 meses de cirurgia, um novo ponto de tumor se acumulou novamente ao redor da testa, além de um ponto no pulmão que já estava sendo investigado, o que nos levou a fazer um exame mais apurado que mapeia todo o corpo dele em busca de possíveis novos pontos. De acordo com o exame realizado ficou confirmado ambos os pontos, mas dessa vez os médicos não querem operar já que se trata comprovadamente que seria inútil à beira de uma recuperação, submetê-lo novamente colocando-o em risco para daqui um tempo novos tumores se manifestarem.

Gabriel está sendo assistido por uma Oncologista especialista no assunto no Brasil a qual deixou claro que no país não há muito o que se fazer. Trata-se de um câncer muito raro que atinge apenas 1% da população mundial. O tratamento no Brasil consiste em monitoramento, extração dos tumores (provocando uma certa mutilação) e sessões de quimio e radioterapia para tentar conter o tumor. Até o momento somos gratos por não ter atingido órgãos vitais já que cirurgia alguma ajudaria.

Tratamento mais moderno recomendado

Há um tratamento que consiste numa terapia genética onde é feita a transferência dos genes de uma molécula para outra.

Trata-se de células de defesa do organismo, que são extraídas do paciente e moldadas em laboratório para combaterem seu próprio tumor. Depois, são infundidas de volta no paciente. Ou seja, elas atuam reprogramando as próprias células do paciente contra a doença.

Desafios

Ainda não se sabe quando esse tipo de tratamento estará disponível para a população no Brasil. Isso acontece devido à falta de infraestrutura para realizar esse procedimento em larga escala e a quantidade de pacientes dentro dos parâmetros.

Somado a tudo isso, é extremamente necessário que o tratamento seja feito em hospitais especializados. Dentre os motivos, estão que os efeitos colaterais desse tratamento podem ser graves.

Com a ajuda de amigos e familiares do Brazil, Gabriel chegou a Hoffman States dia 04.01.2023 em busca de um estudo em Chicago, no Northwestern Medicine, no qual Gabriel é elegível e o mesmo lhe proporcionará 80% de chances de vida.
