Dear Wonderful Supporters,
Our youngest son, Gable, has been stricken with Schizophrenia, a crippling mental disease that affects young men in their mid-20's. It has robbed him of his motivation and direction in life. He has a courageous and loving heart and ever since he was young he has loved helping people.
He was once a devastating wrestler for Warwick High School in PA; he also used to coach young kids and assist people with their work out routines. Furthermore, he has been a hip hop artist, IV the Irish Virus, and for the last 13 years, he has written hundreds of songs, and produced five albums and has performed for 1,000's of fans.
Over 3.5 million people have this baffling disease for which there is no specific cure. 1/3 are homeless, and 50% will never be treated. The symptoms are delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and catatonic behavior
Recently, after numerous hospitalizations and some suicide attempts, he was finally diagnosed correctly. He had started his treatments six months ago until his recent near-death episode. every day, it was a fight just to get out of bed as he battled the horrific side effects of drooling, slurred speech, brain fog and lack of muscle control from the anti-psychotic drugs. We ask for your kind and immediate help to pay for the vast expenses associated with his recovery.
Sadly, last month, Gable had to be rushed to the hospital on February 1 and was put in a medical coma having sustained Hypoxia from oxygen deprivation to his brain from a compromised airway during the night. He was not expected to live Currently, his lungs have healed but his mental recovery will be slow and will need time and lots of prayer and love. our goal of $25,000 is to cover the costs of caring for him
It is unreal to me that just last year, His mom, Nancy, sustained a traumatic brain injury and is now paralyzed but is still the same, beautiful, funny and loving woman I met 41 years ago who wants her son to recover. Incidentally, it was Gable who saved her life with CPR and calling 911
For Gable, the journey back will be one of patience and love from our family as we begin the slow process of recovery. If you have family or friends who may also have this disease, please know that our prayers are with you. Here are some of the struggles he will have to overcome to make a full recovery:
Anomia= Difficulty with words.
Visual disturbances. Difficulty processing visual information
Ataxia, or a lack of coordination.
Apraxia, or an inability to execute a familiar sequence of physical movements such as brushing teeth, combing hair, using eating utensils, etc.
Spasticity, rigidity and myoclonus, disorders which can include a tendency toward jerky motions,
Quadriparesis, a weakness of the arms and legs.
Other symptoms can include: hallucinations and delusions; increased agitation and confusion; depression and other mood disorders; personality changes, such as irritability and a reduced threshold for frustration; and an inability to focus or concentrate.
The overlay of all this is his schizophrenia, which has started to return and we will have to integrate his antipsychotic meds soon.
Gable would also like to hear from his friends who can call to encourage him...he truly needs to feel everyone's love.
His oldest brother, Hagan, Nancy and I thank you all for your great kindness and support. Please call me at [phone redacted] to speak to me personally at any time. Loving thanks to you all Tom, Nancy, Hagan, and Gable
