Dear, Friends and Families

Our dear mother Gabie Rennie Larry (nee Daniel) travelled to Cairns on holiday to visit

families, where she got ill and was admitted into the Cairns Base Hospital. Gabie is one of

the elders from the Iama community (Yam Island) up in the Torres Strait. With love and

respect for the Iama community she contributed towards community-based programs and

events such as helping with NAIDOC activities to teach weaving and, she was a Mothers

Union member at the Church of Torres Strait Saint John the Devine (Sloame). After being

treated in the Cairns Base Hospital for quite some time they decided to transfer her to

another health facility in Manunda Cairns. The SACU Hospital, it is with a heavy heart that I

write to tell you that our dear mother was called upon the Lord on 18th of April 2025. It is a

very painful moment for our families right now and we are trying to arrange a funeral. We

want to give Gabie a respectful service in taking her back home to Iama community (Yam

Island) up in the Torres Strait. How ever the cost of the funeral includes casket, flowers,

travel, and other related funeral expenses, has created a financial struggle.

Our goal is to raise up to $10,000 to help cover these costs. We have started a GoFundMe

page and any contribution, no matter the size would mean so much to us.
