My name is Gabe Quinones, I'm 22 years old and I'm an independent photo journalist who has been covering the frontlines of the protests in NYC, DC, and NJ since May where I have been assaulted and brutalized repeatedly at the hands of police departments across the east coast for simply practicing my first amendment right to press. I dont film where I'm not allowed to, I'm out on public streets, but still getting thrown face first into concrete with nothing in my hands but my camera and a sandwich. I attended a protest in Bergen County where Protestors occupied the space across the street from the Bergen County Correctional Facility to show solidarity with ICE detainees held in the facility who were throwing a hunger strike against their deportation, and inhumane conditions within the facility. Toward the end of the night I was arrested brutally which you can see in the video attached to this gofundme, the officers never announced themselves, their intent to arrest me or my girlfriend, and never instructed us where to go as press members. In the video you can also see 3 other press members run ahead of me and off screen there are 2 behind me who weren't grabbed but my girlfriend who was wearing a Mexican flag was. They proceeded to destroy some of my camera equipment, my backpack, hit me with steel toed boots to the back of my head leaving me concussed, with serious bruising above my ear, and did everything in their power to harass us while we were in their custody. The entire time in there, I focused on making sure they wouldn't further damage my property, or destroy the contents of my SD card so I could bring the truth to the people. I'm hoping to raise money for my legal fees, and any extra money would go towards our charity efforts as we give free mental health services to our community (my girlfriend is Licensed Clinical Social worker) and will also go towards replacing equipment that was destroyed, as well as hospital fees since my back, neck, and head, are severely bruised keeping me from being able to sleep most nights. I never ask for help, I'm usually the one out there taking hits and running back in for my people but they hit me good this time with destroying my equipment and trumping up charges on me to make this fight even more draining. Thank you for your help, any and all support is appreciated, I want to get back out there and continue filming what's going on so I can bring the truth to the people again! Please share on any social media platforms you can if you cannot donate at this time.
This has been extremely draining on my family as I have very close family members in the hospital at this time (dont worry its not COVID) fighting terminal illnesses, as well as my own personal battles/mental struggles I've been going through in the midst of being hit by batons, maced, kicked, shoved, and much more- for simply demanding my rights and respect. It has been extremely stressful to fight this case, while dealing with sick family who depend on me, and countless people who look to me for mental health advocation. I am extremely sleep deprived, and haven't eaten more than 1 meal a day since this happened to me and my girlfriend. I was arrested while following orders, on the same side of the street as other people, with a camera in one hand and a sandwich in the other... I've been trying to stay positive but the charges I'm facing are serious and I really need to get legal representation before my first court appearance on the 31st of this month. The weight of dealing with court dates, family health, mental health, and everything that I witness on a near daily basis is becoming to much to hold which is why I'm turning to the community for help. No matter what I will continue bringing the truth to the people and exposing every police department I come across that violates peoples rights.
