Gabby's Emergency Surgery

Hello friends. On July 13th, while at a cottage for the weekend, both Gabby and Leia had an encounter with a porcupine. They were severely affected by hundreds of quills, and both had to be rushed to the emergency vet that night, over an hour away. The long quills that were sticking out were easier to remove, but the smaller ones that had deeply embedded and broken off have caused complications.

Leia was least affected with less quills, most were removed, and the embedded quills have been working their way out. The cost of her quill removals was $1,114.69, and so after the deductible, taxes, and 10% not covered by Trupanion, only $34 has been covered by the insurance.

Gabby’s condition is much worse. She has deeply embedded quills in her face, throat, feet and leg joints, as well as embedded quills endangering her eyes. The deeply embedded quills are called “floating quills” and they are a risk since they can continue to work their way dangerously deeper. They are also nearly impossible to find and remove and she will need to undergo large sections of ultrasound to try locate them for surgical removal. The vet techs have said it could take multiple surgeries to locate and remove them and is a waiting game of keeping a close eye on her over the next weeks and months. As of 9am this Thursday the 25th, she’ll be in surgery to remove at least another 8 quills causing problems in her throat and legs.

I am humbly reaching out to you all for help, I’m stretched to my limit and so scared for Gabby. This couldn’t have happened at a worse time. I am still recovering financially from Gabby’s emergency surgery to fix a blocked intestine that happened only 3 weeks ago on July 28th and the estimated quote for Gabby’s surgery this Thursday, July 25th is already at $6,000.

Anything helps, no matter how small, and is so very appreciated. I will be posting the Trupanion claims and receipts for all costs in the updates.

J'ai retardé cette publication en espérant que tout irait bien mais ce n'est malheureusement pas le cas.

Ma joyeuse escapade au chalet aura été de 24 heures avant que ça ne vire au cauchemar.

J'ai fait sortir les filles après souper pour un petit pipi de 18 heures, juste devant le chalet et ce qui pouvait arriver de pire arriva. Il y avait un gros porc épic sur le terrain (je ne sais pas pourquoi il était si proche des habitations mais j'imagine qu'il tentait juste de se rendre au prochain arbre). Les deux filles sont évidemment parties après le porc épic. Leia est correct malgré qu'elle a quand même eu une énorme quantité d'épines mais je la surveille de près en espérant que les piquants migrent hors de sa peau.

Mais Gabby a été sévèrement atteinte. Le problème majeur n'est pas les grosses épines que vous voyez sur les photos GFM (je ne veux pas les publier ici parce que ce n'est vraiment pas agréable à regarder mais elles sont publiées ici au bas de la page) mais les plus petites et surtout les morceaux qui se sont enfouis sous sa peau. Plusieurs piquants sont sortis tout seuls durant la dernière fin de semaine mais il y en a beaucoup qui commencent à causer des problèmes.

Alors, aujourd'hui, Gabby est sur la table d'opération pour retirer les épines trouvées lors de l'échographie qu'elle a eu mercredi dernier. Elle est sous anesthésie générale et 13 piquants ont été retirés sauf qu'ils en ont trouvé une douzaine d'autres dont certaines plus profondes et dans des endroits plus problématiques. Chaque épine trouvée sera retirée durant l'opération. Gabby va certainement se sentir misérable après cette grosse intervention.
