Friends, Family, Colleagues:
You know how sometimes you find a person in a terrible situation and feel desparate to do something meaningful to ease the burden? That's what this story is about.
Donald’s 29-yr-old cousin, Arina, is in town from London because her mother, Gabby, has been the victim of a violent crime here in New York City. Gabby, who had been visiting NYC – from London – on her own, was found unconscious in her hotel room by the staff housekeeper, with a blow to the head that has required brain surgery. Arina dropped everything to come here (the police found her by dialing frequently dialed numbers on her mom’s mobile) and spends most nights in a chair in the hospital at her mother’s side. She finds the odd couch as often as she can, but spaces are so small here and she can never find privacy so that she can "turn it off" and rest. It has been seven weeks now. She is exhausted in every way.
We’ve tried to find her a room at no or little cost. No luck. There is no telling how long Gabby will need to stay in the hospital, but it looks like a long haul ahead. She still can’t eat on her own, can’t walk without assistance, and is confused and delusional. Arina is here on her own with limited resources. What we'd like to help her find, at a minimum, is a short-term rental – a place she can retire to in the evenings to cook, shower, sleep, and have a cry. When her mom is finally travel ready, as we trust she will be at some point, Arina needs to get her home to London, where care will continue. That comes with its own challenges.
You might well imagine that Arina is stretched to the breaking point, especially being so far from home. We write to ask you to help us build a little fortress fund.
In gratitude for your consideration,
Beth & Donald Main
