So sorry to have to create this, the puppies Gabby and Gizmo got into the kids' pack of gum.
While we were busy working and the kids were at school, the puppies pulled a fresh pack of gum off the table and ate the entire pack of Ice Breakers.
JR heard Gabby throw up downstairs and went to check on them and found lots of water and what looked like toilet paper. He cleaned it up, thinking not much of it.
When the kids came home, they realized the gum was missing. Due to JR’s cold, he could not smell as well.
We called the pet poison control line, and they advised that due to the potential amount of gum we know Gabby ate and possibly Gizmo, it would be best to take them to the ER.
Our babies will be spending the night in the ER for monitoring and will hopefully pull through.
This is a very large, unexpected cost for two puppies' overnight ER stay.
We hate to ask for help, but this cost will be immense — any help you can contribute is going to the ER bill to assist Gabby and Gizmo.
Thank you all, we are sorry to burden you with this request. This was an honest mistake, and puppies will get into literally anything they can reach, even if it's up on the counter, safely away from them.
Update Saturday morning.
Just leaving the vet — they seem to be doing well they will take off the dextos around noon today and reassess their liver levels at 3pm — if all looks good and not elevated they will release them home and we will have to go back tomorrow around 3-4pm to re evaluate their levels and if all tests well tomorrow they should be in the clear — but advised if today or tomorrow those numbers are elevated the prognosis is not good — hopefully all goes well thank you so much for the support and help - we love you all very much.
Update #2 Saturday night
Puppies liver levels looked good when tested this evening and the ER has released them home with us. They each have meds and supplements they will be taking for the next few days one being NAC which will help combat and liver enzymes left over. They will take these every six hours for the next few days. It appears maybe Gizmo got into more of it or didn’t puke it up as Gabby did and has been a little sicker while at the vet. He is doing well and resting at home happily with Gabby and Finnagin our cat who adores and missed them. They will go back to the vet tomorrow evening to be retested for the liver levels.
Thank you so very much for the amazing support for this unexpected ER stay. We will keep you all updated on their recovery.
Update 3 - Final
Puppies had their follow up blood draw to check their liver levels last night. The test for both came back good for both Gabby and Gizmo. They will continue to take their prescribed medications and supplements for the next few days until the meds are gone. Thankfully they will make a full recovery.
We appreciate all of the support and help soo many of you have made. For the two puppies ER stay and follow up blood draw we are on the hook for $8750 roughly — these donations will help us greatly in distributing the financial burden these little terrors/fluff balls have caused for us. We cannot thank you ALL enough for this help.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts from the entire Byrd family.
