Learning Spanish has always been at the top of my goals list. Now, in my freshman year in college, I have been selected as one of 16 students to study Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I possess a strong personal drive, unrelated to whether or not the language will simply be helpful to me, to achieve my goal of becoming proficient in the language; to be able to read, write and speak the language. That third aspect—verbally communicating the language—is what I hope to gain by studying in Argentina. I believe that the only way for me to really learn to speak a language is to be fully immersed in it—to be given no choice but to keep speaking and trying to communicate with others who may only speak Spanish. I know that this will be a great challenge—perhaps one of the most daunting that I’ve ever faced. Being placed in a world whose first language is not the one that I natively speak will be, I’m sure, a very scary experience at first. But, I also think that the mild duress that this situation may put me under is the type of stress that will push me to excel. At the information session for the program, the program coordinator mentioned a “moment” in which the language just “clicks.” That moment? I’ve been trying to reach it for six years.
