Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
On October 6th, my family and I will be participating in the Ravenscroft relay marathon in Jersey, the Channel Islands. We are doing this in tribute to our beloved grandfather, who passed away earlier this year. We are running in his honour and for a cause that was incredibly close to his heart—Mifumi Primary School in Tororo, Uganda.
Grandpa was a lifelong educator, serving as the headteacher at St. Michael's Preparatory School in Jersey 25 years. But his passion for education extended far beyond his local community.
In 1999 Grandpa and my Granny met the Mifumi charity’s founder, Dr Atuki Turner. They were so inspired by Atuki and her family’s commitment to this cause that they became more and more involved in their support of Mifumi Primary School. Grandpa visited Mifumi and opened new classrooms called the Trinity Block in 2001, and those special memories and his unwavering support of Mifumi remained with him for the rest of his life.
In 2021, I had the privilege of visiting Mifumi Primary School myself (see photos). I saw firsthand the incredible impact that the school has on the children and the community. However, I also witnessed the challenges they face—particularly the severe shortage of textbooks. Currently, the pupil-to-book ratio is a staggering 10:1, meaning that for every ten children, there is only one textbook to share.
Access to quality textbooks is essential for effective learning. Textbooks do more than just convey information; they open up new worlds, inspire creativity, and foster critical thinking. In low-income areas like Mifumi, where class sizes are large, and instructional time is limited, having sufficient textbooks can make all the difference in a child's education. Unfortunately, the government's support is not enough to meet the needs of this growing school.
In memory of our grandfather and his tireless efforts to support this cause, we, his grandchildren, are committed to continuing his legacy. We’ve set a goal to raise £1,000, which will go directly towards purchasing new textbooks for Mifumi Primary School. With your help, we can ensure that every child at Mifumi has the resources they need to succeed and build a brighter future.
Your donation, no matter how small, will make a significant impact. By contributing, you’re not just honouring our grandfather’s memory—you’re giving the gift of education to children who desperately need it. Together, we can help secure the basic right to education and empower these young minds to reach their full potential.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
With heartfelt gratitude, Jacob, Caitlin, Christopher, Josphine and Zanett
