My sister's last wish
Donation protected
Sophia is my older and only sibling. She has end stage heart failure at the young age of 25 and we were just told that she is too weak to receive a heart transplant. Doctors are expecting the worst.
My sister is fully aware of her situation and wants to have her final wish granted: to bring our grandmother and aunt to the U.S from Peru to see them for the last time.
Unfortunately, we currently don't have the money to pay for their travel expenses, as well as any other costs for everyday needs. My dad is the only one currently working full time , and is having to take many days off work to be with my sister in the hospital. I am also trying to help my family , juggling a part time job and going to the hospital and supporting Sophia and my parents. The money we make together is barely enough to cover our own living expenses and we don't have an extra penny for additional food or any other costs.
Every cent is desperately needed and appreciated to pay for their tickets and help our family through this incredibly difficult time. Please, I ask all of my family, friends, friends of family, etc. to share Sophia’s story with everyone you know to grant my sister's final wish. Thank you in advance for your support, and please continue to pray for her and our entire family. .
If you would like to know more about her story:
On May 28th 2014 Sophia was diagnosed with scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease that involves the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. Due to her lack of insurance at the time, she was not able to receive the expert care that she needed to properly get the disease under control. In December 2014, six months after her diagnosis, Sophia began to find it hard to breathe. Her doctor immediately ordered additional tests and referred her to the Stamford Hospital. In January of 2015 they discovered that her heart was substantially damaged and that she her life was in danger.
We did some additional research and find out that there was a doctor at YaleMedical Center with extensive experience in scleroderma. At the very first appointment when she first saw Sophia, she decided to admit her to Yale because her illness was advancing very rapidly and was not under proper control. The treatment proposed by the rheumatologist was chemotherapy for six months. After the chemotherapy ended in July of 2015, she confirmed that the scleroderma was under control and that the treatment had worked effectively.
In August of 2015 Sophia took a turn for the worse and she was taken to the emergency room at Yale Hospital. Her doctors admitted her to Yale again and did many tests. The doctors informed us that the only way to save her life was for her to receive a heart transplant.
Because of problems with insurance and lack of money, doctors could not put her on a heart transplant list right away. The Doctors continue to provide medical care while we explore some possibilities to find insurance coverage so that she could be out on a transplant list. As weeks went on, on October 14 doctors informed my sister and our entire family that she had become too weak to the point where she would not tolerate a heart transplant. Doctors are trying out a new test to see if she can get at least a little better but they are not optimistic. This is our last and only hope. This is a heartbreaking situation for our family and everyone that is close to Sophia. We ask for your prayers as my sister fights for her life.
