I used to joke that Sean and I used up all of our life's allotment of luck in finding one another when we were in high school. Very few people find their soul mates like we did, and even fewer find them so early in life.
For twelve years, we had each other, and we had adventures and life was about as perfect as we could have imagined.
We were ready to think about expanding our adventures into parenthood. Unfortunately, it seemed like our life's luck really had been spent already--we found that we are very unlikely to be able to have children without medical intervention.
In the last year, we have done many, many tests, which led to intermediate level treatments. When they failed, we moved on to IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Our initial attempt at IVF was unsuccessful and emotionally devastating for us.
We are not ready to give up yet, and have switched to a clinic with a reputation for success with more difficult cases. I am cautiously optimistic that we may have a better outcome next time.
However, to date we have spent about $17,000 on fertility testing and treatments. Our next IVF procedure is estimated to be $20,000. This is the cost for us to have a family. Maybe. It is still a gamble, and there is a strong possibility that all of the money will be spent for nothing more than a chance. Our insurance does not cover this, as it is considered "optional treatment". We don't feel like we have a option: if we want to have a biological child, this is what we have to do, and risk, and pay.
I'm hoping that I've been all wrong about luck. I'm hoping that we still have some coming our way to help us make a science baby. We would be forever grateful for your financial help in getting us closer to making our family a reality. I set our GoFundMe goal at $2,000, which is 10% of the cost of our next procedure, and seemed like a reasonable amount to ask, but of course we will be thrilled with any amount at all. Every little bit does actually make a difference. We can't thank you enough for your generosity and support as we try to navigate this difficult time in our lives.
