This is a plea for help for our friend Michael Deadman. Many of us have known Michael since our university days. Michael has had diabetes since the age of 17 and is now suffering with complications that have led to one illness after another.
Michael's Need
Michael needs a double transplant. He’s on waiting lists in Toronto and London, but has been told it could take up to 5 years to get one.
He no longer has the energy to work – this fact alone is a drain on his emotions and is a somber reminder that in times of a life-threatening illness, there is a great need for friends to step up to the plate.
I am asking you to support Michael by making a donation, no matter the size, to help him through this difficult time.
The Backstory
I’ve known Michael since university days. I learned how calamitous his health had become when Michael and his wife Kym came to Woodhaven Country Lodge for some much-needed respite. He was exhausted from being on a transplant waiting list, being on dialysis, weekly visits to emerg at St. Mikes and often spending one -two nights in the hospital/week just to get his blood sugars and other body functions regulated.
Michael sold his home in Oakville to move back into Toronto in 2014. He had to quit his job and they moved into an apartment close to the hospital. They lived off their savings, incurring high costs associated with staying alive while awaiting a transplant.
He is really at the end of his rope physically and financially because of the toll this disease has taken on him. Imagine being in your late 50’s, at the mercy of the long list of kidney donors, spending most of your savings on health care and living costs ....it’s hard to imagine it getting much more off the ‘Freedom 65” track than what he has been through.
Several of us have done the tests required to be a donor. Unfortunately none of those willing to be tested have resulted in a transplantable kidney for Michael. At this point he is on several waiting lists between London and Toronto and needs not only a living/cadaver kidney but also a cadaver pancreas to survive.
It is possible Michael will get a reprieve from his misery but in the meantime, he has moved to Waterloo so he can be considered part of that regions group needing a kidney and is hopeful the wait time will be less in Waterloo than in Toronto.
How to Help Michael
Michael Deadman could be me ...or you. It was just unlucky he was born with the predisposition for diabetes and has lived with its consequences for the last 48 years.
If you would consider a donation, no matter the size, it would help Michael get thru’ this difficult time.
