In memory of Alex Donaghy
Donation protected
As you might be aware, Alex Donaghy has been missing since November 2021 and has not been seen or heard of since. We are setting up this fundraiser for an event in memory of Alex in July, and a donation towards East London Out Project (ELOP), an LGBTQIA+ mental health charity.
We’ve always admired Alex’s radical presence, both in life and art. Alex’s deep-rooted care for the human condition steered him through all aspects of his life. This manifested in a curiosity towards learning about and supporting people.
Whilst committed to serious matters, Alex constantly charmed us with his warmth and playfulness. He had a whole breadth of interests, which he skilfully weaved together: gardening and extreme poetry; cycling and transgressive cinema, cooking and grappling body performance. It was a pleasure to venture into them with him.
Al/ice/ex’ works were grounded in social and political values and reflected topics such as mental health, early trauma, migration, anti-institutionalism & commodification. These topics then extended into an ongoing research into vulnerability and social problems in relation to public and private space. Al/ice/ex formed a resistance to social control and sought to create alternate ways of thinking which unsettle our normal rhythms of thought.
MEMORIAL EVENT DETAILS
The memorial is going to be held on the 16th of July 2022, from 18:00 at Apiary Studios in London (458 Hackney Road, E2 9EG).
The attendance is by RSVP through the form available here: link
YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS
In the last message sent by Alex, he asked us to organise a memorial filled ‘with extreme art and extreme music’. The event we’re organising will consist of two rooms with visual art, sound installations, music, and art performances. He mentioned that he would like for people to enjoy themselves and for all of his friends to connect.
We believe it is very important to realise this event according to Alex’s wishes, and have a chance and space to all meet to celebrate and remember Alex, his uniqueness and beautiful mind. We are keen to have the voices of the people who have known and shared memories with Alex to be present in the space.
Therefore, we would like to invite you to contribute to a collaborative sound installation that will be included in the art programme.
The format and duration of contributions are flexible. For example, it could be a voice recording, a fragment of a book read out loud, a piece of music, a field recording, or any other sound-based media. It is possible to submit more than one contribution. The selection will be edited and presented in a cohesive multi-channel sound installation.
We’d appreciate it if you could submit those by this form by the 30th of June 2022.
WHERE THE FUNDS WILL GO
The funds collected will go towards the costs of the memorial event, as well as towards the East London Out Project (ELOP) mental health charity, which offers low-cost, social, emotional and support services to LGBTQIA+ communities.
Thank you for your contributions and we look forward to sharing our memories of Alex.
