On Monday, June 20th, Christopher and I received devastating news that rocked our foundation to the core. A team of doctors asked us to come outside to discuss Xavier's x-rays. We knew it was serious. Maybe a fracture next his knee or a bad sprain. We were wrong, the oncologist informed us that our ten year old son could possibly have cancer, namely, osteosarcoma. I asked to see the X-rays and it was clear that Xavier's bone had deteriorated. The next step was confirmation via biopsy. Within two days, we were brought into a room, and given the devastating news that Xavier had bone cancer and that the bone and the growth plate would not be saved. I dropped to my knees and let out a sound that even to me was foreign. The cry of a mother who realized her baby was hurt and she couldn't stop the pain. Those moments are engrafted in my mind forever. After talking further with the oncology team, the team, Chris and myself decided to tell Xavier. We shared the news with our ten year old son and my baby cried. He grieved. He asked why. He asked why would God allow this to happen to him? Then he was worried about his family, his grandmother, Aunt Shayla, Auntie Brittany and sisters. He asked for his MaMa! He cried until she left work and came to his hospital room. Xavier wanted his sisters. He was devastated and wanted his family. A few hours passed and he told me, "Mommy, Roman Reigns had cancer twice and he beat it, and I will beat it too." It took everything for me to not cry in front of him. A few days later was his first chemotherapy treatment. The medication was harsh to his ten year old body. He battled with nausea and vomiting. He stopped eating and drinking. We were worried. We had to send him back to Brenner's to receive fluids and potassium due to electrolytes being so low.
We are in the beginning of a long road that is ahead of us. Xavier's treatments will continue for 9 to 12 months. We will be going back and forth to Brenner's multiple times throughout the upcoming months. Xavier's chemotherapy requires multiple days in the hospital along with various days of check ups in oncology and orthopedics. Food, gas, money for parking and household items are needed. We are also asking for assistance for the payment for his treatments.
We know that the healthcare system and insurance companies are not always fair to those who need and require care.
