As many of you know, Becky Shockley has been fighting cancer since 2007. This is her 5th cancer diagnosis and 3rd surgery for it. She has been through many radiation and several chemotherapy treatments also.

On October 26th, she went through a major surgery at KU Med. They removed her right lower and mid jaw, lymph nodes, and part of her tongue. They used bone, muscle, tissue and blood vessels from her arm to reconstruct her jaw. They also placed a trach for her to have an airway. During the surgery she lost a lot of blood. Once moved to the recovery room, she went into hemorrhagic shock. Her heart went into a rhythm as if she was having a heart attack. After several blood transfusions, others blood products and medications, they were able stabilize her and to transfer her to ICU. She remained there for 4 days before being transferred to another unit. She is still on medication and steroids to keep her blood pressures from being critically low. Once her blood pressures stabilized, they were able to put in a feeding tube in her stomach and remove the one from her nose. She has had numerous IVs and continues to get IV antibiotics. Her IV sites don’t last longer than 12-24 hours before they go bad. Her surgical sites are hot healing well because her skin and tissues have been through so many cancer treatments. They don’t not want to remove her trach because they are worried they could have to take her back to surgery to try to fix the areas that are not healing properly. Another surgery is not what she needs.

The earliest she will be released from the hospital to the skilled nursing facility would be November 5th. She will be at Meadowbrook in Gardner for an unknown period of time. Once she recovers she will need to start chemotherapy and radiation treatments again.
